During the 59th Annual Concrete Paving Workshop, the Iowa Concrete Paving Association (ICPA) announced the winners of the 2022 Portland Cement Concrete Paving Awards.
In determining the winners of Iowa's most prestigious paving awards, 86 nominated projects were rated on smoothness, quality control, general appearane and workmanship, contractor management, safety, and project complexity. The ICPA and the Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) jointly evaluated and recognized projects as 2022's best concrete pavements built in seventeen categories.
The winner in the Overlay Project (State) Category was the IA 31: C66 in Washta to US 59 in Cherokee County.This snaky and hilly project included 6 horizonal curves, 5 of which had superelevation ranging from 2.4% to 7.2%. High-way 31 also boasted an astounding 158 vertical curves.
The length of the project was 9.97 miles long and CVC crews placed over 175,000 SY’s of paving. The project called for a nominal 6 inch thick, twenty-four foot wide overlay with attached 2 foot wide, 9 inch thick shoulders. A safety edge was also added on the outside shoulder. This pavement consumed 34,400 cubic yards of concrete.
